IMS Retrofit in Birstall - Revolution Porsche Specialists
Revolution Porsche Specialists were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to carry out (we believe) the first IMS Solution installation in the UK.
The IMS Solution, designed by Flat 6 Innovations and LN Engineering, is a Direct Oil Fed (DOF) system that will last the lifetime of the engine.
Although its release comes post the IMS Ceramic Bearing upgrade, the IMS Solution has been developed over many years allowing for extensive testing in all operating conditions.
The majority of Porsche owners, especially those who have access to the internet, will no doubt realise that the M96 engines have a well-known weak spot (the IMS bearing), this solution removes the IMS bearing completely which in turn removes that horrible, niggling paranoia that ruins ownership for many people.
The IMS Solution is suitable for all M96 and M97 engines that have the single row bearing installed (typically model years 2000-2005). For those that have the earlier models with the dual row IMS bearing, you will need to stay with the Classic IMS Retrofit for now which, in itself, is a worthy and beneficial modification.
The IMS Solution removes the component (IMS Bearing) that breaks down and leads to either catastrophic engine failure OR debris in the engine oil which in turn, starts to damage every internally lubricated component!
The factory single-row sealed IMS bearing has an inner and outer race, bearing cage and 8 ball-bearings which amounts to a whopping 11 potential wear components.
If you are unlucky enough to suffer an IMS Bearing failure, the debris from those wear components will enter and destroy the engine and this can mean, in many cases, that a repair is not cost-effective.
The IMS Solution replaces all these wear components with just a single component. The wear surface is aluminium alloy and not harmful hardened steel.

Revolution Porsche Specialists are delighted to offer, for installation only, the latest IMS bearing upgrade developed for 2000-2005 Porsche Boxsters and 911s – the Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit.
Designed by Flat 6 Innovations and LN Engineering, the Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit features an angular contact, dual-row ceramic hybrid ball-bearing that boasts a 90% greater load capacity than the factory-fitted IMS bearings from those model years.

As with the renowned original IMS Retrofit ceramic bearing kit, the second-generation product offers reduced wear and offers a longer service life.
Or to put it another way, it will give you peace of mind that your Porsche will not suffer a catastrophic engine failure due to the notoriously problematic factory-fitted bearing.
Engineers identified the fact the single-row bearing, used from 2000 to 2005, had only half as much load capacity as the dual-row version used on earlier models and was a major contributory factor to the number of IMS bearing failures in 986 Boxsters, 996 911s and a few of the very early 987 Boxsters.
A quick look at the statistics shows that the single-row IMS bearing factory-fitted on those Porsches has an estimated failure rate of 8%, compared with just 1% for the earlier dual-row version. (Figures are taken from the official IMS Retrofit website).

The dual-row ceramic hybrid ball-bearing solution developed for the Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit has a vastly improved load capacity over the standard IMS bearing, eradicating this potential cause of a costly bearing failure.

An IMS bearing failure has the potential to be one of the most expensive problems Porsche owners can encounter, as it can lead to catastrophic engine failure or a range of components being damaged by debris in the engine oil.
Sometimes, there are some clear warning signs that the bearing is failing, which will give you the opportunity to have it replaced with a superior retrofit product before serious damage is done.
If you spot any metallic debris in the filter while carrying out an oil change and there is an oil leak at the rear of the engine, there is a possibility the IMS seal and bearing is failing and that your Porsche may need an upgrade.

The Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit is available for engines manufactured between 2000 and 2005, but any Porsche Boxster, Cayman or 911 (other than the Turbo, GT2, or GT3 models) from 1997-2008 is susceptible to IMS failure.
We still offer the original IMS retrofit upgrade for all 986 and 996s, while cars from model year 2006 onwards are likely to require more extensive work to replace the IMS bearing. Call us for full details of these services.
